I’m going to look at this tomorrow:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Anything I should watch out for? Aside from what the seller’s detailed in the ad?

What are you planning on doing with it?

I’ve heard bad things about Cavaliers...
...but I’ve always thought the coupes looked pretty cool.
Good luck, I guess.

Looks like a Cavalier. You might want to watch out for that.

Did it work?

500 bucks? Do it as long as it passes inspection, does not burn oil and doesn’t smell like dead skunk shit inside.

These have the Quad 4, right? If so, NP. These things kinda suck, but the things that fall apart are quick easy fixes and/or won't strand you. My cavalier was a penalty box, but I always started.

Hard to kill, but hard to love. Too bad the original wheels are gone.
![]() 06/24/2016 at 20:50 |

Why would you do that to yourself? My third car was a shitty early gen cavalier with ~140k. Blew the head gasket at 150k. At least it was a manual.

Slap some Toyota badges on it, and your good to go.

I’m just looking to buy something cheap to learn to drive stick and teach my wife. I was contemplating keeping the car that I buy as a project car, but if it’s complete shit then I’ll just offload it.
![]() 06/24/2016 at 21:03 |

Meh, I’m actually not too worried about inspection, my parents have a bit of land in the country where I can learn to drive stick and fix it slowly to make er road worthy.

LOL, I’m stepping back from the ledge and starting to look at used Golfs again.

I’ve never experienced a car that felt so poorly slapped together as a 2004 Cavalier I drove once, the fisher price interior is awful. $500 is not a lot of money, but I wouldn’t pay that much for it....around here at least, I don’t know what the pickings are like for cheap cars in your area
![]() 06/24/2016 at 21:06 |

Learning to drive stick and teaching my wife; generally just hooning it about. Was contemplating keeping whatever car I buy as a project car, but maybe not this if I buy it.

The ad won’t come up on mobile..
Rust. Rocker panels, behind anything you can’t see.
Otherwise it’s a detuned Olds Quad4 with a Getrag 5 speed and it can be serious fun!
![]() 06/24/2016 at 21:09 |

No old Corollas or Tercel manuals for that cheap a price....? They’d be infinitely not-a-Chevy-Cavalier, i.e. better.
![]() 06/24/2016 at 21:11 |

Don’t buy a cheap car to learn stick in. Buy a good car and drive it exclusively. Buying a rust pile with a dying clutch will teach you the wrong way.

MGB GT PROJECT!

According to wikipedia, it’s the 2.4L (the 2.3 Quad 4 was dropped in 1996). Apparently the Z24 also has “sport tuned suspension”. As far as I know, it’s basically the precursor to the 2.4L Cobalt SS.

The head gaskets will almost definitely be leaking. So there's that. Plus it's generally crap, but if you're just using it to learn stick, you'll be okay.

Do you own a tow truck? Because it’s the only thing that will make this move ....

LMFAO, yup, that made my night! What a perfect time for this video!

It should be interesting, I’m kind of excited lol.
![]() 06/24/2016 at 21:35 |

Except it doesn’t have forced induction, which is what makes the Cobalt SS as fun as it is. It’s more like a predecessor to the Cobalt Sport coupes. Also, look for rust, these are rust-prone cars.

Ya, the OE wheels would have been nice.

My wife and I had a 2.2L Cobalt for about 8 years, it had an aftermarket intake and was actually pretty good fun. The Cobalt SS name was actually used for the NA 2.4L too, which was basically just the 2.2L with a bit more push (like 20hp). Granted, the S/C or T/C SS would no doubt be more fun.
Something just occurred to me... I know far too much about Cobalts than any one person really should... I think I’ve become a Tupperware enthusiast.

I’ve contacted a couple and they’ve been picked up within hours of the ad going up! There was this red corolla (I love red cars) about 30min from my house that I wanted buy it was gone too quick :(

They can be fun. Once you get over the stigma of Cavalier. The “Z” cars were actually pretty good.

Ya, I owned a Cobalt for 8 years, I’m already over the Cavalier stigma lol.

Someone says Cavalier and I can only think of this. When I was in college I saw that, from then on the Cavalier had a whole other meaning!
![]() 06/24/2016 at 22:01 |

Awww......a Toyota Echo would be a reliable ride to learn on as well! I had a friend with a Sunfire (the Cavalier’s platform mate) and he had no shortage of issues with it....he’d also paid $500 for his...

AE89 Corolla instead?

It can be arranged

I should totally start 24 hours of lemons in Canada!
![]() 06/24/2016 at 22:30 |

My Toyota engine codes are a little rusty, which is the AE89 (I tried Google but to no avail)?

Ahhh, pretty much the only use for that car is to learn stick with. Not sure about that price, but it is your money.

Haha, awesome!
![]() 06/24/2016 at 23:14 |

I’m jelly, I’ve seen ZERO corollas like that around here... blame Canada.

I drove a Cavalier in ontario (eastern ontario here) for 6 years and 144,000 kms. By the time I sold it it had 234K Kms. Great little cars, engine lasts forever.

I loved mine for the first 130,000 kms I put on. By the last 14K kms (at this point the car has 234K) I was over it. But the new owners love it. I sold it for $900. They said the car was so cheerful and happy haha.
That was the car 2 days before I sold it. Miss it a little bit.

Niagara area here. My wife and I drove a 2.2L Cobalt for 8 years and I actually quite liked it (it had an aftermarket intake which got to just the right pitch of ear rupturing satisfaction).
When I was doing the research on these, at least according to wikipedia, I discovered that the SL’s were supposedly developed entirely by Saturn (I always assuming that it was a sister to the Cavalier/Sunfire like the Ion was to the Cobalt/G5). It’s actually got a 1.9L engine instead of the Cavalier/Cobalt 2.2/2.4.
